Why Choose LAMTA
An environment where unique individuals can flourish.
One of the toughest decisions facing any student who has decided on a career path in the Arts is choosing the right college, academy or school in which to train. Many of these institutions have a demanding and rigorous audition procedure, making the application process even more intense. In addition to this, students and their parents soon discover that these establishments have a vastly different rationale in how they design their courses and curricula and the theory behind their training of young artists.
Our first suggestion to you is to do your research, find out all you can about these training facilities, visit them if necessary and then go with your gut. Choose a school that speaks to you, whose ethos and atmosphere makes something in your heart and mind come alive, a place where you can see yourself spending virtually every second of your day – because you will – a space that wills you to be creative, expressive and happy.
LAMTA is not in the business of producing an abundance of students with mediocre talents. We care deeply about each individual that walks through our doors. At LAMTA, we create an environment where unique individuals can flourish. We are open and candid with our students with the aim of helping them develop the skills and knowledge they need in order to gain success in an extremely competitive field.
Our course is a highly practical course. We believe strongly in the concept of multi-discipline training with a wide-ranging curriculum so that our students graduate with the essential tools of the trade and an enormous amount of versatility. As the demands on Musical Theatre performers become more rigorous each year and the boundaries between the genres of theatre merge, the need for triple threat performers in the Performing Arts is essential.
LAMTA’s close links with producers, agents, artists, directors and choreographers within the Performing Arts Industry both nationally and internationally ensures that we provide our students with a world-class training. Our faculty consists of lecturers, teachers and mentors who are specialists in their fields and who are actively involved in the profession themselves.
Through intensive classroom studies, workshops and masterclasses, the LAMTA student will develop the skills required to work quickly efficiently and creatively at a professional level. On-stage experience will teach them to respect and appreciate the craft of theatre-making. Discipline and regard for theatre craft and one’s fellow performers are key to our training. Theory will play an important role in the training of a LAMTA student who will graduate with a thorough knowledge of the history of both theatre and musical theatre, the major shows and the creators that shaped them, from the classics to those currently on the world stage. Training in sight reading, improvisation, accent work and character development will ensure that they are ready to approach professional auditions and rehearsals confidently. Lessons in Arts Administration will teach them how to turn their ‘dream’ into a reality with an important focus on the ‘business’ of show business and how to successfully use their talents to earn a living.
Students will gain some knowledge of all areas of Entertainment Technology from design to stage management by working on the stage at the Theatre on the Bay. Students will be given the opportunity to gain work experience on professional shows with professional actors, where our students will meet mentors and work alongside artists who inspire them outside of the classroom.
At LAMTA we help students find their own voice, their X-factor, what makes them unique and authentic. Our students must be deeply aware of the commitment required to be successful in this program and in the industry at large and must, therefore, dedicate themselves to rigorous training to reach their full potential as artists. Our training is not about overnight success or helping you find your five minutes of fame. We are here to free your creativity and to help you develop the skills that will contribute lastingly to a life in the Performing Arts.
We urge you to be a sponge and soak up everything our Academy has to offer over your three years here. Studying Musical Theatre is not easy, your body will be pushed to its limits, your emotions stretched to great lengths, and you will face your fears and vulnerabilities. If you are up for the challenge and believe that you have the talent, the passion, the dedication and the temperament to be one of the next generation’s foremost performing artists, well then…
…we cannot wait to meet you!
